Todd Cella, Lymphoma Cancer Survivor and President of Utah Basement, Kitchen and Bath

A cancer diagnosis is one of the most frightening events anyone can experience, and there's no guarantee that aggressive treatments like chemotherapy and radiation will work.

One type of cancer that impacts thousands of families around the world every year is called lymphoma.

According to the American Cancer Society, almost 71,000 new cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma are diagnosed each year, and almost 19,000 patients don't survive. Including other types of blood cancers, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society suggests someone in the United States is diagnosed with blood cancer every 3 minutes.

As a Lymphoma survivor and marrow recipient, Utah Basement Kitchen and Bath President, Todd Cella understands the critical need for new donors:

"Mere words don't express how grateful I am to have two of my siblings be matches. I know I have a good chance of surviving a transplant. But 70% of patients needing a transplant don't have a matched family member. What about all those individuals, both children and adults, who don't have matches? What about the desperation of their family members, husbands, wives, children, brothers and sisters? So much hinges on "the match."

There is an answer. And it is an important one. YOU can be a donor. YOU can easily contribute a little effort to save the life of someone else. The Be The Match Registry® is a bank of people who are ready, willing, and able to be donors to someone who has no other option to save his or her own life. It truly is a miracle in the life of the receiver and the life of the giver."

This ongoing need for donors is why we've partnered with Team Be The Match to set up a Marrow Donor Registry Drive this December:

About Lymphoma

According to the Lymphoma Research Foundation:

Lymphoma is a type of blood cancer that occurs when lymphocytes--white blood cells that help protect the body from infection and disease--begin behaving abnormally. Abnormal lymphocytes may divide faster than normal cells, or they may live longer than they are supposed to. Lymphoma may develop in many parts of the body, including the lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, blood or other organs.

Many patients diagnosed with lymphoma will face treatments that include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or both. Sometimes, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation are necessary. However, it's often difficult to find donors, particularly when a patient doesn't have family members that match or when a person has a diverse ethnic background.
